A deadly explosion rocked a four-story apartment building on Tuesday morning around 9 a.m. at 5601 W. West End Ave in the South Austin neighborhood of Chicago. The blast injured eight people, and emergency crews rushed to the scene with ten ambulances.
At least eight individuals were taken to local hospitals. Among them, a male and a female were transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, while three others — two males and one female — were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. One woman was admitted to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, and two men were sent to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. Notably, one of the injured was across the street at the time of the incident.
The fire department arrived quickly and worked to stabilize the building to allow for a full search. After completing the final inspection, officials confirmed that all residents had safely evacuated the premises.
A spokesperson from Peoples Gas stated that the cause of the explosion is still under investigation and that there is no indication it was related to gas or their equipment. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Chicago Police Department Bomb Unit were also on site to assist with the investigation.
The explosion occurred on the top floor of the building, on the eastern side. It caused significant damage, sending bricks and debris into the street and damaging at least three vehicles parked nearby. The roof of one unit collapsed, and several windows were shattered by the force of the blast.
Building records reveal that the structure has been cited multiple times since 2010 for various code violations. In January 2017 and February 2018, the building failed inspections due to faulty smoke detectors. A more recent violation in 2020 involved a gas appliance not properly connected to a vent. Following an administrative hearing in February 2020, a follow-up inspection confirmed that all issues had been resolved.
