2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 3-21-20

On March 21, 2020, just after midnight, the 15th Battalion arrived at 38th and Ashland (3752 S Ashland) and reported a working structure fire. After nearly 20 minutes, they requested a Still & Box as they pulled all personnel out to transition to defensive operations. A68 transported one firefighter in serious condition to the hospital following an incident inside the burning building. Three 2.5-inch lines were deployed, along with three aerial master streams. TL39, AT8, and Sq1’s Snorkel provided the aerial water delivery. A 2-11 was eventually called in by 2-2-4, though most of the 2-11 companies were not utilized. Notably, this was the first time that AT8’s brand new rig used its pre-piped waterway system.

This event was notable not only for the intense firefighting efforts but also for the use of newer equipment and strategies. The deployment of aerial master streams from multiple units helped control the spread of the fire, while the decision to switch to a defensive operation highlighted the importance of firefighter safety. It was also a significant moment for AT8, as their new rig made its debut with the pre-piped waterway system, which is designed to improve efficiency during large-scale incidents. As always, the dedication of the crews on scene played a critical role in managing the situation.
