Retired firefighter Daniel Lougeay from Marissa has recently donated a vintage 1963 Chevrolet Howe fire truck to the Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) Fire Science Program. The retired vehicle, once part of the Willisville Fire Department, will now serve as a hands-on training tool for students learning essential firefighting skills such as operating fire hose pumps and understanding equipment functionality.
"I believe it's important to support the next generation of firefighters," said Lougeay. "Helping them gain real-world experience not only benefits their careers but also ensures the safety of our communities. It’s rewarding to be part of a program that’s making a difference in our region."
The fire truck was originally purchased by Lougeay in 2002 from the Willisville Fire Department and was used for parades and historical fire truck exhibitions. Now, it will be housed at the SWIC Clay Baitman Fire Science Center in Belleville, where all fire science courses are conducted. With over 30 graduates each year, the program is known for producing skilled and well-prepared firefighters.
SWIC offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree in Fire Science, with two specializations and 11 different certificate programs. This comprehensive curriculum prepares students for various roles within the fire service and emergency response fields.
