Here's a report from Eric Haak:
Early on Thanksgiving morning, just before sunrise, a fire broke out at the former Wing Hoe restaurant in Chicago’s 9th Battalion. The building, originally constructed as a private home in 1913, had been operating as the Wing Hoe since 1971. At the time of the fire, it was vacant and set for demolition. In fact, crews had been working inside the structure just the day before. The two-and-a-half-story brick building with a basement appeared to be the origin point of the fire.
Engine Company 83 arrived quickly and tried to get a line on the fire before it could spread. However, the structure was already compromised—there were holes in the floor and heavy smoke filled the interior. Due to the dangerous conditions, the decision was made to switch to a defensive attack.
I arrived as the area was being secured and immediately noticed thick smoke pouring from all sides of the building. Engine Company 59 made an entry through a rear door that led to the basement, using a safe vantage point. They managed to make some progress, but the fire had already extended significantly.
To bring the situation under control, a Snorkel, a tower ladder, two RAMs, and several hand lines were deployed. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further into the neighborhood.
Eric Haak captured several powerful images of the scene, showing the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the responding units. The photos highlight the scale of the incident and the professionalism of the Chicago Fire Department during this challenging event.
