On Friday, July 10th, at just before 4 p.m., firefighters from Wheeling and neighboring auto-aid companies responded to a confirmed fire at 15 Brougham Drive in the Whippletree Village mobile home community off McHenry Road. The fire was clearly visible for miles due to the intense smoke coming from a burning mobile home. Police were on the scene confirming the incident, and initial reports mistakenly suggested that two children might have been trapped inside the structure.
Upon arrival, the first responding units found a mobile home fully engulfed in flames, with fire spreading quickly to adjacent units on both sides. Despite the confusion, the first engine company on the scene immediately launched a defensive firefighting operation. Both Wheeling engine companies had their lines deployed, and all auto-aid and mutual aid units provided essential manpower support to contain the blaze.
Firefighters worked aggressively to tackle the fire, which spread to three mobile homes in total. The extreme heat made the environment extremely challenging, and the original structure was completely destroyed. The nearby units suffered severe damage, rendering them uninhabitable.
The effort was supported by firefighters from several surrounding communities, including Prospect Heights, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Schaumburg, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Rolling Meadows, Lake Forest, and Lake Zurich. Their combined efforts helped prevent further spread of the fire and ensured the safety of the surrounding area.
Numerous photos captured the intensity of the situation, showing thick smoke rising from the burning trailer and firefighters using large hand lines to battle the flames. These images provide a powerful visual representation of the challenges faced during the incident.
