Dongfeng Cummins: Using technology to build the foundation "evergreen"
In November 2008, Tongji University's Rongan Zhiyuan Team 2 claimed victory in the second Honda China Motor Energy Efficiency Competition, achieving an impressive fuel efficiency of 966.271 km/L. Their success was largely attributed to the exceptional low rolling resistance performance of German brand high-performance tires. The competition brought together 108 teams from 40 universities across the country, along with Honda-related enterprises, media representatives, and public participants, as well as guest teams from Thailand and Japan.
The Rongan Zhiyuan team continuously refined their vehicle’s energy efficiency, and the use of professional low rolling resistance tires from a renowned German brand played a crucial role in their achievement. These tires provided the optimal equipment for the competition, allowing them to complete the race on the Shanghai Circuit track with minimal fuel consumption. The tire technology specifically designed for this event enabled the tires to deliver remarkable low rolling resistance, giving the team a competitive edge.
“Tires have a significant impact on a vehicle's fuel economy,†said Teacher Xie Yuhui from Tongji University. “We hope this knowledge can be widely shared. Reducing rolling resistance is a major step toward energy conservation, and our competition serves as a great demonstration of that.†He also expressed gratitude for the support from the Malaysian tire brand, hoping for continued collaboration with the Continental Group in future projects and technological developments.
Klaus Kreipe, General Manager of Continental Horse Tire Trading Co., Ltd., emphasized, “About 20% of a car’s fuel consumption comes from tire rolling resistance. Therefore, reducing it has a direct effect on fuel efficiency. Over the past two decades, we've managed to reduce rolling resistance by one-third. At the same time, we believe that lowering resistance should not compromise safety.â€
Through this competition, the horse tire engineers achieved an ideal balance between low rolling resistance and safety, enabling the Rongan Zhiyuan Racing Team to explore the full potential of every liter of gasoline. This effort not only highlighted the importance of energy conservation but also raised public awareness about sustainable driving practices.
This year, the German brand's HDL Eco Plus tires topped independent fuel economy tests in Quebec, Canada, outperforming other test tires by 2.4 percentage points. This achievement underscores the brand’s commitment to resource efficiency, environmental protection, and contributing to broader societal efforts in energy conservation and environmental awareness.
