On Friday, March 29, at 3:20 PM, the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District responded to a residential structure fire in the 3700 block of Riverside Drive. Firefighters arrived quickly and found heavy smoke coming from the rear of a two-story home. They initiated an exterior defensive attack using multiple hose lines and truck operations. A call was made through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (M.A.B.A.S) for additional resources. Crews worked swiftly and brought the fire under control by 4:14 PM. Firefighters stayed on scene for another two hours to monitor and overhaul smoldering items inside the house.One resident was present during the fire and safely evacuated. One cat was found deceased, while a second cat is still missing. Initial investigations suggest the fire started on the second floor, but the exact cause is still being looked into.The two-story home suffered extensive damage and is now uninhabitable. The two residents are currently receiving temporary housing and support from the American Red Cross.ÂA total of 17 neighboring agencies responded to the scene or helped cover Nunda’s fire station during the incident.
