Excerpts from riverbend.com:
Retired firefighter Daniel Lougeay from Marissa, Fairview Heights, has recently donated a vintage 1963 Chevrolet Howe fire engine to the Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) Fire Science Program. The retired fire truck, which once served the Willisville Fire Department, will now play a vital role in training future firefighters at the SWIC Clay Baitman Fire Science Center in Belleville.
The donation is more than just a vehicle—it’s a hands-on learning tool that will allow students to gain practical experience in operating fire hose pumps and other essential firefighting equipment. “Helping the next generation of firefighters become skilled and confident is incredibly rewarding,†said Lougeay. “It's not just about their personal growth, but also about ensuring the safety of our communities.â€
Lougeay originally purchased the truck from the Willisville Fire Department back in 2002. He used it for parades and historical fire truck exhibitions, preserving its legacy. Now, the truck will be put to good use in an educational setting, supporting the program that has trained over 30 new firefighters each year.
The Fire Science Program at SWIC offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree with two specialized options, as well as 11 different certificate programs. Students can choose from a range of courses designed to prepare them for careers in emergency services, including fire suppression, emergency medical response, and hazardous materials handling.
