Automotive Air Quality Assessment Guidelines formally implemented on March 1

During the Spring Festival, Mr. Du was very happy to drive a new car to his hometown for the New Year. In the past, it took a day to take a bus and it took four hours to get home. Apart from his pleasure, Mr. Du was tortured along the way: the "plastic smell" of the new car stunned him, and he had to endure the cold wind to open the window. "This road is so open and closed. It was safe to get home." Talking about this experience, Mr. Du seemed very helpless.

There are not a few consumers who have the same distress as Mr. Du. According to the survey, more than 80% of consumers are concerned about the “taste” of new cars. Fortunately, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine jointly issued the Guidelines for the Evaluation of Air Quality in Passenger Cars, and will formally implement it on March 1. This guide sets limit values for eight common concentrations of volatile organic compounds in cars, including benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde. Although this is only an index guide for the interior environment of the vehicle, it is not a mandatory standard, and it cannot substantially suppress the hazardous substances in the vehicle. However, to a certain extent, consumers have a basis for rights protection in the interior of the vehicle.

What is the standard?

This standard stipulates the concentration requirements of benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, styrene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein in the air in the vehicle. Vehicles already on the road can also refer to it. China's air quality standards for cars are based on relevant overseas standards, but they are still less stringent than the European Union and North America.

However, testing also requires certain conditions:

At the time of sampling, under the environmental conditions stipulated in the "Method for sampling volatile organic compounds and aldehydes and ketones in vehicles", the vehicle under inspection must be in a static state. At this time, the doors, windows, and air intake vents of the crew compartment are all closed, and the engine and air conditioning equipment are not working.

Where is the source of pollution?

Car pollution is mainly formaldehyde and benzene pollution. Formaldehyde mostly comes from soft interior materials such as chairs and roof decorations, while benzene is mainly from plastic.

How to use the new car healthily?

Do not open the new car immediately after it is bought. In addition to ventilation every day, you can also put some activated charcoal, grapefruit peel, or pineapple, lemon and other tropical fruits in the car. These are natural “air refreshers”. When not in use, you can also play a small bucket of clear water, pour some vinegar, and put it in your car.

Consumers need to be reminded that there are many agencies on the market that can detect the air in the car. However, before commissioning a consumer, consumers should be sure to recognize whether they have the qualification for "indoor air quality standards" measurement certification so as to avoid ineffective rights protection.
