The BDI, the Baltic Sea Freight Exchange's dry bulk freight index, rose on Friday, but delays in freight activities have put pressure on freight rates in the coming days.
The Baltic dry bulk freight index rose by 0.13% or 2 points to 1,585 points.
"The rise in freight rates may have been just a flash in the pan, and this has happened many times in the near future," said Petter Rishovd, head of commodities at Pareto Securities. "The supply of ships is sufficient, but iron ore giants are said to be less active."
Japan is a major importer of dry bulk commodities such as iron ore and coal. As a result of the earthquake and tsunami attacks on March 11, shipments in the marine market have been hit.
The Japanese government said on Friday that the radiation of the country’s large ports is at a “pretty safe†level, with a view to alleviating the growing concern of the global shipping industry about the operational safety and insurance issues near Tokyo Bay.
The Baltic Sea Freight Index (BACI) rose 0.39%. The average daily profit of Capesize vessels increased for the fourth consecutive day, rising slightly to US$10,718, after falling for six consecutive days. Capesize vessels usually carry 150,000 tons of cargo and the cargo is mainly iron ore and coal.
"This week's performance of the Haihai-Chang-type shipping market is quite complicated. The resistance from the ship owners has led to a reversal of the loose market and pushed up the freight rates," said broker Braemar Seascope.
The Baltic Sea Panamax Freight Index BPNI rose by 0.05%. The average daily profit of Panamax ships rose slightly to US$16,693. The type of ship usually carries between 6 and 70,000 tons and the main cargo is coal and grain.
