Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway Brings Opportunities to the Electromechanical Industry

The speed of 300 kilometers per hour is regarded as the fastest speed in China's land transport; the construction cost of 130 billion yuan is second only to the investment scale of the Three Gorges Project. These two factors are superimposed on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail project, and the news of its establishment has immediately become the focus of public concern.
According to the statement of the Beijing-Shanghai Iron and Steel Project approved by the State Council, the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail will use high-speed wheel-rail technology. The entire line is designed with a top speed of 350 kilometers per hour and a speed of 300 kilometers per hour. Once a high-speed railway line is built, it is 1,320 kilometers. Although the cost of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail is half that of the magnetic suspension, it will reach 100 million yuan/km.
As the latest technology in railway transportation, high-speed railways involve a very wide field, no less than aerospace engineering. In the face of a sky-high investment of 130 billion yuan, what industries can get a share of this feast?
The construction of high-speed railway transportation can be roughly divided into three parts: fixed facilities, mobile equipment and electronic control systems.
Fixed facilities, including land prices, bridges, roadbeds, tunnels, rails, and station construction, can account for about 40% of the total cost of Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail. The mobile equipment mainly refers to the EMUs (combination of power vehicles and non-powered vehicles), which covers the independent research and development as well as the manufacturing and maintenance costs for the purchase of core technologies for locomotives and EMUs of foreign companies. The electronic control system mainly refers to the central control and train control as well as train communication and network technology. These two parts will account for more than 50% of 130 billion yuan.
According to the opinions of experts who have participated in the feasibility study of China High Speed Rail, the fixed facilities in the early stage of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway should be completed within 36 months, and at the same time, the mobile equipment will also begin to be built. The electronic control system will begin its architecture after the fixed facilities are completed.
The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail will start construction in 2006. This means that the construction of fixed facilities with a cost of over 50 billion yuan (130 billion - 40%) is about to start. As the fixed facilities involve the construction of bridges, roadbeds, tunnels, rails and stations, related building materials, such as cement, stone, iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, plastics, and equipment used for road construction, such as equipment for tracklaying machines, excavators, etc. will The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail construction project has achieved huge profits.
Different from traditional railway construction, the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail adopts electric locomotives, and suppliers of electric energy and power equipment providers will also appear in the railway construction team.
Because the locomotive technology used by the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail is currently not owned by Chinese enterprises, it needs to introduce technology from abroad and digest and absorb it. In this regard, the first benefit will be provided by foreign companies that provide technology and EMUs, such as Siemens in Germany, Alstom in France, Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan, and Bombardier in Canada. At present, the first three companies are helping CNR Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works, Changchun Railway Vehicle Co., Ltd. and CSR Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co., Ltd. to develop EMUs with a speed of 200 kilometers per hour and above.
As the high-speed rail project EMU and the localization rate of parts and components will exceed 70%, this will bring huge orders to China's processing and manufacturing industries. Domestic locomotive production, steel processing and related parts processing companies will receive a large number of orders and huge profits.
The construction of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail communication control system involves the use of computer hardware and software technology, high-end communication equipment, and a large number of cables and optical fiber materials. Providers in these industries will also have the opportunity to share a slice of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail feast.
