Bayer plans to convert carbon dioxide into plastic raw materials

China Drying Network Co., Ltd., Bayer AG and Germany's Aachen University of Technology and energy supplier RWE have been working together to find new ways to convert carbon dioxide into plastic raw materials. On November 13, local time, at the CAT catalytic center of Aachen University of Technology in Germany, the reporter saw that the use of carbon dioxide to produce polyols, and further made polyurethane foam samples have been successfully tested. This project has a unique name - "Dream Maker."

On the same day, Bayer and Aachen University jointly announced their progress in this area. The "Dream Manufacturing" research project led by Bayer recycles carbon dioxide from flue gas emitted from a lignite power plant of RWE, and uses it as a raw material to produce polyols, which react with isocyanates to form polyurethanes. Experiments have shown that the properties of materials containing carbon dioxide are the same as those made using conventional methods. Bayer plans to begin using carbon dioxide for industrial polyol production in 2015 and bring its products to market. The first end product launched will be a mattress made of polyurethane made of carbon dioxide.

According to the person in charge of the project, the "Dream Manufacturing" project was launched in May 2010 and received funding from the German government. The development of the catalyst is the key to this project. A CAT catalytic center operated by Bayer in cooperation with Aachen University implemented a research project called “Dream Response”. In April 2012, it successfully developed a zinc-based catalyst that enables carbon dioxide to enter into rapid and efficient reactions and reduce energy consumption. It has become possible to use carbon dioxide for the production of polyols.

Bayer also partnered with partners to launch another carbon dioxide utilization project using renewable energy and catalytic technologies. The project plans to separate the carbon dioxide from the flue gas emitted from the power plant, use the excess wind power recovered by Siemens as the source of energy to produce hydrogen by electrolyzing water, and then react carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce carbon monoxide, which will ultimately be used to make polycarbonates, polyurethane foams and so on. The project will be carried out at a pilot plant in Leverkusen, which will be commissioned in 2013. In addition to Siemens and RWE, the partners of this project are 10 academic institutions responsible for catalysis research, process design, reactor optimization, and integration process analysis. The plan began in late 2010 and was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Education.

Bayer said that the development of carbon dioxide utilization technology will make carbon dioxide, which has always been regarded as a “climate killer,” become an important source of carbon in plastic products, become an alternative to petroleum, and contribute to the sustainable development of human society.

Chemical Dosing System For Oilfield

In light of the defect existing in the artificial Chemical Dosing System in Jinzhou Oil Production Plant,the automatic chemical dosing system was developed.The control task of the system mainly deals with the adding of two chemicals.The different control schemes are adopted to control two piston pumps and one salt-feeding electric motor.It is characterized by high reliability,flexible structure,friendly interface and easy operation.The system hardware mainly consists of host computer,slave computer and field instruments.The field application shows that the system has solved the defect of artificial chemical dosing,achieved automatic management and saved large amounts of manpower.The chemical dosing volume fraction of the injected water is completely in agreement with the design requirement and the development efficiency of water injection is thus ensured.
