CNOOC independently developed two drilling logging technologies

This indicates that China has broken the international monopoly in the field of directional drilling and logging while drilling in oil and gas fields, and can independently complete the mining requirements of offshore “clusters” and complex oil and gas layers, which is expected to significantly reduce the comprehensive cost of domestic oil and gas field development.

Oil and gas field development has always been like a “calculation problem” of aging and cost, that is, how to complete drilling services with the lowest cost and the fastest speed in the case of known underground oil and gas reservoir locations? In other words, if you want to mine “cheap and cheap” oil and gas resources, you must use the least number of wells to complete the largest range of reserves, and achieve the shortest drilling cycle with the least number of times of drilling. In the face of this problem that must be “calculated,” oil companies have chosen directional drilling technology that can “horizontal” travel in the formation.

Unlike general drilling operations, directional drilling operations do not allow the drill bit to “straight” the target layer. Instead, the drill bit is required to drill in the depth of the formation at a designed slope until it hits an underground reservoir with a depth of several kilometers. ".

At present, more than 40% of directional wells in the world are drilled using a rotary guide system. The advantage is that it can control the drilling direction in the well in real time, and realize the trajectory adjustment of the drilling tool similar to the “3D version of Snake”. The target formation in the “three-dimensional” area – even a 0.2 m diameter drill bit can be run horizontally or diagonally in a 0.7 m thin oil layer, enabling a long-distance operation of “shoring” movement of 1000 m. This precision guidance is of great value in reducing development costs and maximizing the development of oil and gas fields.

If the rotary steering system is likened to a "flying leg" in a drilling system, the logging while drilling system is the "clairvoyary eye" mounted on it. The rotary guide system can complete operations in the underground several kilometers, and it is inseparable from the “navigation (product library purchase supply) guidance” of the LWD system. The logging while drilling system can feed down the underground geological data of “drilling along the way” to the ground at any time, and the logging engineer can complete the instant information processing and command communication, which is equivalent to adding “clairvoyary eye” to the downhole equipment.

The two systems work side by side, can realize directional rotary drilling of the whole well, adjust the well trajectory in real time, and measure the underground environmental parameters, which can greatly improve the operation efficiency and reduce the engineering risk. It is the ultra-deep water, horizontal well and large displacement well. The “handcuffs” of directional well operations with equal difficulty.

However, due to the difficulty of research and development, these two technologies have been monopolized by three oilfield technology service companies in the United States for many years. Currently, more than 40% of directional wells worldwide are drilled using a rotary steering system. According to global workload statistics, in 2014 these two technologies brought at least about $20 billion in revenue to related companies.

In 2008, with the support of the “National 863 Program”, CNOOC Oilfield Services Co., Ltd., a holding company of CNOOC, began to independently develop two systems of rotary steerable drilling and logging while drilling. After arduous exploration, it finally broke through the technical bottleneck. Formed a trademark, system technology and equipment system with independent intellectual property rights.

On November 18, 2014, the rotary steerable drilling and logging while drilling system independently developed by COSL (stock) jointly completed the offshore operation for the first time. This indicates that China has broken the international monopoly in the field of oil and gas field drilling and well logging technology, which is expected to significantly reduce the development cost of domestic oil and gas fields, and add a heavyweight weight to the competition of COSL in the international high-end oilfield technology service market.

In the Bohai operation completed yesterday, the two systems completed the 813-meter directional well operation and successfully hit three targets of 1613.8 meters, 2023.28 meters and 2179.33 meters. The maximum well angle was 49.8° and the minimum target center distance was 2.1 meters. Prove that the two systems are capable of offshore operations.
