Michelin: Excellent Performance and Safe Green Economy

On September 13, 2011, Michelin , the global tire technology leader, brought its latest products and research and development projects to the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show . With its excellent performance balance of products – maximum safety with excellent grip, fuel economy with low rolling resistance and longer total mileage – “choose tires, change everything” is more than just Michelin's slogan is even more verified by automakers.

For the new BMW M5, Opel Ampera and Citroen D11 concept cars at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show, from high-performance tires equipped with super sports sports cars, to energy-efficient tires specially equipped for hybrid vehicles, to nine passengers Prototype concept tires, Michelin's cutting-edge technology and efficient road solutions enabled the three vehicles to reinterpret the meaning of road travel.

Michelin is committed to all these car manufacturers and drivers to provide high-quality tires to meet their different needs, and its strategic layout is focused on the development stage of the tires. Michelin adheres to its product development philosophy of "a balance of performance and excellence", that is, to enhance a product's performance while not sacrificing other aspects of performance, thereby ensuring that the interests of users are not lost. This commitment is at the core of the Michelin Group's strategy. You can also feel this clearly before the Michelin booth at the Frankfurt International Motor Show.

“Selecting tires and changing everything” is the core concept of the first global advertising campaign of the Michelin Group. From the end of 2009, Michelin Thematic Advertising has been successively global television, publications and networks. At the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show, Michelin took the audience to Michelin tires in the form of 3D animation to help drivers overcome road obstacles and make vehicles safer and safer.

With excellent performance balance, the fourth-generation MICHELIN ENERGYTM Saver tires have been equipped on nearly 150 models of cars produced by the leading car manufacturers, and have successfully passed use certification. This shows that many automakers have witnessed how Michelin's green tire technology continues to protect the safety of occupants while improving vehicle fuel economy.

For automakers, this potential trend will become increasingly significant due to increasingly stringent regulations. The EC Regulation 443/2009 sets a timetable that will apply to car manufacturers and will begin in 2012. If the carbon dioxide emissions produced by them exceed the standards, they will be punished.

From 2012 to 2018, manufacturers will bear the following costs for each new car sold:

If the carbon dioxide emissions exceeds 1 gram, 5 euros will be levied per gram of CO2 emissions per kilometre;

Carbon dioxide emissions exceeding 1 gram to 2 gram are levied at 5 euros, which exceeds 1 gram for 15 euros per gram.

Carbon dioxide emissions exceeding 2 grams to 3 grams are levied at 20 euros, which exceeds 2 grams for 25 euros per gram.

For carbon dioxide emissions exceeding 3 grams, a charge of 45 Euros shall be levied, exceeding 3 grams for an additional 95 Euros per gram;

Starting from 2019, 95 euros per kilogram of carbon dioxide emissions will be imposed;

Vehicles used by each car manufacturer for average emissions calculations will increase year by year: from 65% in 2012 to 75% in 2013, and from 80% in 2014 to 100% in 2015. [Source: EC Regulation 443/2009]

In this case, Michelin tires will play a vital role - because without any other changes to the vehicle, Michelin tires alone can achieve an average reduction of 4 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. And this will not bring about the deterioration of other aspects of tire performance. As a result, Michelin tires became a "plug and play" solution. In addition to meeting the stringent quality standards that have been customized by the Michelin Group, Michelin’s achievements in other aspects of tire performance can also be a good response to the new challenges facing the global automotive industry.

European regulations require that starting from November 2012, passenger car tires must be pre-sale and in-sale, providing a label containing the following three types of information: the impact of tire performance on vehicle fuel economy (as shown in Figure 1 below); The braking performance of slippery road surface (as shown in Figure 2); external noise level (as shown).

In addition to providing the above specific information when the driver selects a tire, this labelling system will also achieve a more important goal: the sale of the tire must meet the minimum of the three performance indicators specified on the label.

In addition, the new regulations fully comply with the expectations of European drivers. A study initiated by TNS Sofres for European drivers over a period of more than five years found that the three areas of greatest concern were: vehicle safety, safe driving, and tire usage.

As early as in 1992, Michelin's revolutionary innovation in green tire technology, which for the first time introduced silicon to drastically reduce rolling resistance, has demonstrated its extremely forward-looking pioneering research and development of new tires that have energy saving and emission reduction effects without affecting other key performances. At the Frankfurt International Motor Show this year, Michelin has followed the legislative trend, focusing on product performance excellence and extending tire life, providing a full range of road solutions.
