In spring, the southern region experiences high humidity, making the demand for dryers in this area more pronounced. However, the market has recently been flooded with doubts about the authenticity of dryers and issues like "drying failure," which have sparked skepticism within the industry. A reporter recently spoke with an official from the National Household Electrical Appliances Standardization Technical Committee, who revealed that on February 23, a meeting was held in Zhuhai to review the draft of the national standard for tumble dryers. Once the draft is approved by the National Standardization Technical Committee for Household Appliances, the national standard for tumble dryers will officially come into effect this year.
According to an industry source involved in the development of the standard, two key performance indicators—drying efficiency and power consumption—will serve as the "hard targets" for the new standard. These metrics are expected to bring greater transparency and quality assurance to the market.
Topic I: High Prices Deter Consumers
A report released by the State Council Development Research Center titled "China City Drum Washing Machine Usage and Demand Situation, 2005" highlights that 60.7% of consumers in major Chinese cities prefer washing machines with drying functions. After years of market cultivation, the drum washing machine sector has entered a period of steady growth, with washing and drying models becoming increasingly popular among urban consumers.
However, the high cost of these machines remains a major barrier. For instance, one dryer model is priced as high as 15,000 yuan, which is unaffordable for many average consumers. Current prices range between 4,000 and 15,000 yuan, deterring potential buyers despite growing interest in the product.
Topic II: Drying Technology Faces Challenges
As an ultra-high-end product, drum drying technology has encountered significant hurdles in China. Industry experts point out that most dryers imported into the Chinese market are based on traditional foreign technologies that do not fully consider local usage habits or environmental conditions. This mismatch has led to poor user experiences, making even high-quality foreign dryers seem less appealing to Chinese consumers.
Many dryers suffer from incomplete drying, long drying times, and limited consumer awareness of these issues. As a result, some consumers end up paying premium prices but still fail to get satisfactory results.
To regain consumer trust, some brands have introduced 10-year warranties and promotional campaigns, aiming to counteract negative perceptions. However, these tactics have created confusion in the market, leading to increased competition and tension among manufacturers.
Topic III: Dryers Face the "Bake-Up" Issue
The ongoing debate over genuine versus fake dryers has intensified. Experts note that the absence of a national standard for tumble dryers has allowed some brands to enter the market without necessary technological upgrades, relying instead on brand reputation and consumer ignorance to gain market share.
One major issue is the drying time. Some dryers use a timer-based system, requiring manual adjustment, which can lead to over-drying or under-drying. This inconsistency fails to meet consumer expectations for efficient and safe drying.
Another concern is the uniformity of drying. Traditional dryers operate at a fixed temperature regardless of the moisture level of the clothes, potentially damaging fabrics and causing color fading. Additionally, these dryers often lack multiple drying modes, making it difficult to handle different types of fabrics effectively.
Standardization on the Horizon
At the recent meeting in Zhuhai, notable figures such as Lu Jianguo, Secretary-General of the National Committee for the Standardization of Household Appliances Cleaning Equipment, and Lu Peishi, General Manager of Haier Washing Machine Company, participated in the review of the national standard for tumble dryers. The standard is largely based on the International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 61121 (2002-07) guidelines.
Once approved, the standard will set mandatory requirements for all tumble dryers in the market. Industry analysts believe this will bring significant changes, forcing manufacturers to improve their products and compete more fairly.
In 2006, the washing and drying machine industry is expected to undergo a major transformation. With the introduction of the new standard, competition will become fiercer. Foreign brands may need to adapt better to the Chinese market, while domestic brands face increased pressure. The future of the industry remains uncertain, with both challenges and opportunities ahead.
