Tumble dryer out of standard this year

In spring, the southern region experiences high humidity, which has led to a renewed demand for dryers in the local market. However, recent concerns about counterfeit dryers and issues like "drying failure" have sparked doubts within the industry. A reporter recently spoke with an official from the National Household Electrical Appliances Standardization Technical Committee, who revealed that on February 23, a meeting was held in Zhuhai to review the draft of the national standard for tumble dryers. Once this draft is approved by the National Standardization Technical Committee for Household Appliances, the national standard for tumble dryers will be officially established this year. According to an industry source involved in the standard formulation, drying efficiency and energy consumption will serve as two key performance indicators in the new standard. This move aims to bring clarity and quality control to the market. Topic I: High Prices Deter Consumers A report released by the State Council Development Research Center titled “China City Drum Washing Machine Usage and Demand Situation, 2005” found that 60.7% of consumers in major Chinese cities desire washing machines with drying functions. After years of market development, the drum washing machine sector has seen steady growth, with combined washing and drying models becoming increasingly popular among urban consumers. However, the high price of these appliances remains a barrier. For instance, some dryers are priced as high as 15,000 RMB, making them unaffordable for many. The current price range of such products—between 4,000 and 15,000 RMB—has deterred numerous potential buyers. Topic II: Technological Challenges in China Despite being considered a high-end product, drum drying technology faces challenges in the Chinese market. Industry experts note that most dryers imported into China use traditional foreign methods that do not fully account for local usage habits or environmental conditions. As a result, even high-quality foreign dryers may not perform well in Chinese homes. Many dryers suffer from incomplete drying, long drying times, and lack of user awareness. Some brands have attempted to regain consumer trust through long warranties and low-cost promotions, but this has caused confusion and tension in the market. Topic III: The "Drying Up" Controversy Recent debates over the authenticity of drying functions have intensified. Experts point out that the absence of a national standard for tumble dryers has allowed some manufacturers to sell substandard products without technological upgrades. These companies rely on brand reputation and consumer ignorance to capture market share. One issue is the drying time. Some machines use a timer-based system that requires manual adjustment, leading to over-drying or under-drying. Another problem is inconsistent drying, where fixed temperatures are used regardless of the fabric type or moisture level, potentially damaging clothes. The upcoming national standard is expected to introduce strict performance criteria. The draft references the IEC 61121 (2002-07) standard, and once approved, it will set clear guidelines for all tumble dryers. Industry analysts predict that 2006 will be a turning point for the washing and drying machine market. With the new standard in place, competition will become fiercer. Foreign brands may need to adapt to local conditions by establishing research centers in China, increasing pressure on domestic manufacturers. In the end, only those who can meet the new standards will survive.
