Recently, Chongqing Sanitation Group and the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences have signed a "Scientific Cooperation Agreement," marking the official launch of the city's long-awaited soil remediation project. This collaboration is a significant step forward in addressing environmental challenges caused by industrial activities over the years.
It is reported that as Chongqing continues to adjust its industrial structure and implement the "retreat into two or three" plan—aimed at moving polluting industries out of the city's core areas—numerous heavily polluted enterprises have either been shut down or relocated. By the first half of 2007, more than 60 polluting companies, including those involved in chemical and pesticide production, had been moved out of the city. These companies previously used hazardous chemicals in their production processes, and their operations generated toxic waste that seeped into the soil, posing serious risks to both the environment and public health.
According to official data, there are approximately 3.53 million square meters of contaminated land across Chongqing. The scale of the problem highlights the urgency of the remediation efforts.
In addition to this initiative, Chongqing Sanitation Group will partner with the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences to establish the Southwest China Environmental Remediation Center. This center will serve as a demonstration base for the National 863 Project, focusing on advanced technologies for cleaning up sites affected by major environmental pollution incidents. The goal is to create a national model for soil restoration and environmental protection in the region.
The new center will be responsible for monitoring and comprehensively treating contaminated soils throughout Chongqing and the broader Southwest China region, ensuring long-term ecological safety and sustainable development.
