Recently, Chongqing Sanitation Group and the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences signed a "Scientific Cooperation Agreement," marking the official launch of the city's soil remediation initiative. This collaboration aims to address long-standing environmental challenges caused by industrial activities in the region.
As part of Chongqing's ongoing industrial restructuring and the implementation of the "retreat into two or three" strategy, several heavily polluting enterprises have been shut down or relocated from the urban core. By the first half of 2007, over 60 polluting companies, including those involved in chemical and pesticide production, had moved out of the city. During their operations, these industries released hazardous chemicals and toxic waste, which seeped into the soil, posing serious risks to both the environment and public health.
According to available data, approximately 3.53 million square meters of land in Chongqing is contaminated. To tackle this issue, Chongqing Sanitation Group has partnered with the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences to establish the Southwest China Environmental Remediation Center. This center will serve as a demonstration base for the National 863 Project, focusing on advanced technologies for cleaning up polluted sites following major environmental incidents.
The new center will play a key role in monitoring and treating contaminated soils across Chongqing and the broader Southwest region. It aims to set a national standard for environmental restoration and promote sustainable development through innovative and effective remediation strategies. This project represents a significant step forward in addressing soil pollution and ensuring a healthier living environment for residents.
