Early this Friday morning (6/2/17), the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) responded to a report of an ATV on fire at 24341 Elm Road. The situation quickly escalated when a subsequent call informed dispatchers that the fire had spread to the attached garage. Lake Forest Engine 422 was the first to arrive and immediately reported a fully involved garage fire. Following closely behind were LRFPD Engine 52, Squad 51, and Battalion 51. These initial units used up all their onboard water during the initial attack.
Countryside Engine 411 joined the Lincolnshire units shortly after and supplied additional water via a hose line. The residence is located in an unincorporated area of Lake Forest, lacking access to nearby hydrants.
Upon arrival, Battalion 51 upgraded the response level to a Code 4 for an active fire and simultaneously initiated a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) request. This brought in multiple water tankers and supplementary fire suppression teams. Portable tanks were deployed by Long Grove and Countryside tankers. While Long Grove drafted water from these portable tanks to supply the firefighting efforts, tankers from Countryside, Wauconda, Grayslake, and the Palatine Rural FPD transported water from a hydrant approximately a mile away.
The fire was primarily contained within the garage but also extended slightly into the house and attic.
Attached are several images capturing the scene. Larry Shapiro’s photographs provide a detailed look at the rural water supply setup, the fire raging through the roof of the attached garage, the smoldering aftermath, and the extensive firefighting operations. The images also showcase the collaborative efforts of various departments, including Lake Forest FD Engine 422, Lincolnshire Riverwoods FPD Engine 52, and numerous tanker trucks.
