Lake Zurich 4th Alarm house fire 4-21-13

Late Sunday evening, just before 8 PM, the Lake Zurich Fire Department received an urgent call about a fire at a residence across the street. Within minutes, the chief and the first responding engine arrived on the scene. It was a two-and-a-half-story wooden structure with significant flames engulfing the front facade at 21716 W. Glendale Road. Lake Zurich Engine 3 was the first to arrive and quickly had water on the blaze. They used a deck gun to douse the fire, which was primarily consuming the cedar shingle siding on the exterior of the house. As firefighters prepared to enter the building, they received a concerning report that a resident might still be inside. This prompted an elevation to a second alarm, which included water tenders due to the lack of hydrants in the unincorporated area. Fortunately, all residents were soon accounted for at a neighbor's home. The bulk of the fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, allowing crews to begin extensive overhaul operations. Unfortunately, there were two injuries requiring hospital transport—a resident and a neighbor who had collapsed on the lawn. A firefighter also suffered an injury to his arm but was cleared to remain on-site after a brief evaluation. Initially, the second patient's transport commitment led to a third alarm, calling for additional ambulances and change of quarters companies. Later, when concerns arose about the firefighter needing transport as well, a fourth alarm was issued solely for more ambulances. The fire response involved numerous departments, including Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Long Grove, Round Lake, Libertyville, Deerfield, Palatine Rural, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Arlington Heights, Fox Lake, Nunda Rural, Mundelein, Wauconda, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, the Quad 2 Command Unit, Countryside, Schaumburg, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Barrington, and Cary. Larry Shapiro provided several images and a short video from the scene. One photo captures the house post-fire, showing extensive damage to the exterior but no longer actively burning. Another shows Lake Zurich Engine 3 positioned in front of the house, supplying multiple lines as firefighters worked to extinguish residual flames in the eaves. A third image highlights the fully involved front of the home upon initial arrival. Additional photos depict various aspects of the operation, including Schaumburg Ambulance 54 attending to the injured firefighter, portable tanks supplying water to engines, and numerous fire apparatus staged along Quentin Road. Despite the scale of the incident, the collaborative efforts of all participating departments ensured a swift and coordinated response. The fire caused significant structural damage, leaving much of the property severely compromised. However, thanks to the dedication of the responders, the situation was managed effectively, minimizing further risk to life and property.
