Barrington house fire 3-28-12

The Barrington Fire Department got a call around 9:30 PM on Wednesday from residents saying there was a fire in the garage of their home at 23170 N. Church. By the time Barrington Engine 363 arrived, it was clear that the garage was fully involved and spreading to the house. Following closely behind was Lake Zurich Engine 2, who quickly turned around in the cul-de-sac and laid down 400 feet of 5-inch supply line to the end of the street. One of Barrington's tankers set up their portable tank, establishing a water supply as various units began working on advancing two lines into the house through different entrances. The structure was built on a slope, with one story in the front and two stories on the side. Barrington soon called for a MABAS Box Alarm, which brought additional tankers from Wauconda, Fox River Grove, and East Dundee to support the initial two Barrington tankers and Long Grove Tanker 55. Palatine sent over Truck 85, while engines came from Hoffman Estates, Palatine Rural, and Carpentersville. Rolling Meadows stepped in with an ambulance, and Cary Squad 255 was already on-site setting up a light tower for better lighting conditions. Chief officers also arrived from Long Grove, Wauconda, and Carpentersville. Barrington Engine 3 was positioned in the cul-de-sac and managed to supply three lines in total. The house, built into the hill, had two floors on one side and just a single floor in the front. A Carpentersville crew focused on putting out hotspots in what remained of the completely destroyed garage. Despite extensive damage to the back of the house, this wasn't immediately visible from the street. Cary Squad 255 was actively deploying a light tower, ensuring proper illumination for the entire operation. Meanwhile, Cary firefighters worked diligently to clean up the area around the foundation of the garage. An image captured by Larry Shapiro showed the silhouette of a firefighter against the thick smoke. Tragically, the family's dog did not survive the fire, but thankfully all residents were able to evacuate safely. The Box Alarm was officially canceled shortly after 10:30 PM. Larry Shapiro reached the scene after the fire had been put out and shared these photos. For more images, you can view the full gallery HERE.
