Three young brothers tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire that engulfed a basement apartment in West Humboldt Park. The children were trapped with only one exit, which was blocked by flames. A fourth boy is still in critical condition after the fire broke out early Sunday in the back of the apartment at 4032 W. Potomac.
The mother of the children was also injured in the fire, suffering burns and smoke inhalation. With the back door blocked, she had to break a window to escape. She is currently hospitalized, recovering from facial burns, and remains in a weakened state.
Firefighters arrived at 12:20 a.m. and found the apartment door locked from the inside. They had to force their way in. Two children were found unresponsive near the entrance, while the other two were discovered on the opposite side of the apartment. All four children were rescued and suffered from smoke inhalation.
Aiden Cruz, 5, was pronounced dead at Saints Mary and Elisabeth Medical Center. Jayden Cruz, 6, and Angel Rodriguez, 11, were hospitalized but later succumbed to their injuries. The fourth child is still being treated in the hospital.
Investigators believe the fire started from an open flame in one of the back rooms, but the exact cause remains under investigation. It is unclear whether the fire was accidental or intentional.
Interestingly, firefighters heard working smoke detectors upon arrival, but none were found in the basement where the children were located. This raises concerns about the safety measures in place.
Property records show that the home had three apartments, including the basement unit. However, it is still unclear whether the basement was legally built or operated, as it only had one exit, which may have contributed to the tragedy.
All four children were brothers who lived with their mother and her partner in the apartment. The community is in shock, and local officials are calling for a full review of building codes and safety regulations in similar residential units.
