Fatal fire in Chicago, 6-26-22 (more)

Excerpts from Fox32Chicago.com:

Three young brothers tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire that broke out in a basement apartment in West Humboldt Park. The children were trapped with only one exit, which was blocked by flames. A fourth child is currently in critical condition after the early Sunday fire erupted in the back of the apartment at 4032 W. Potomac.

The children's mother was also injured in the fire, suffering burns and smoke inhalation. With the back door blocked by flames, she was forced to break a window to escape. She is now hospitalized, recovering from facial burns and remains incapacitated.

Firefighters arrived at 12:20 a.m. and had to force their way into the locked apartment. Two children were found unresponsive near the entrance, while the other two were discovered on the opposite side of the unit. All four children were rescued and suffered from smoke inhalation.

Aiden Cruz, 5, was pronounced dead at Saints Mary and Elisabeth Medical Center. His older brothers, Jayden Cruz, 6, and Angel Rodriguez, 11, were hospitalized but later succumbed to their injuries. The fourth child is still being treated in the hospital.

Investigators believe the fire was sparked by an open flame in one of the rear rooms, but the exact cause remains under investigation. It is not yet clear whether the fire was accidental or intentional.

Firefighters reported hearing working smoke detectors upon arrival, but none were found in the basement. This raises concerns about safety measures in the building.

Property records indicate that the home contained three apartments, including the basement unit. However, it is unclear whether the basement was legally constructed or operated, as it had only a single exit, which may have contributed to the tragedy.

All four children were brothers who lived with their mother and her partner in the apartment. The community is in shock over the loss of such young lives, and local officials are calling for a full review of building codes and safety protocols in multi-unit residences.
