UOP LLC, a subsidiary of Honeywell, recently announced that Viva Methanol, part of Eurochem Group, has chosen UOP/Hydro's MTO (Methanol to Olefins) technology and Total Petrochemicals/UOP's olefin cracking process for a groundbreaking project in Nigeria. The facility, located at Viba Polymers in the Lagos Bonded Zone, will produce light olefins—such as ethylene and propylene—from natural gas-derived methanol. These olefins serve as essential building blocks for various plastic products, including packaging materials, pipes, films, and carpets.
This marks the first large-scale industrial application of methanol-to-olefins and olefin cracking technologies. With Nigeria's abundant natural gas reserves and cost advantages, the plant is positioned to be highly efficient and economically viable. The facility is expected to generate 1.3 million tons annually of ethylene and propylene, supporting growing demand in the plastics sector.
UOP will provide full technical support, including process design, catalysts, specialized equipment, and ongoing assistance. The project, which began with preliminary designs in 2003, now benefits from significant technological advancements, allowing for greater efficiency and scalability. The plant is scheduled to start operations in 2012.
According to the chairman of Viva Methanol, "The MTO technology enables us to leverage Nigeria’s natural gas resources, offering a more cost-effective alternative to traditional crude-based production. This plant, producing 10,000 tons of methanol daily, is the largest of its kind globally. UOP’s technology helps us convert methanol into high-value olefins, meeting the rising demand for plastics."
A UOP petrochemicals executive added, "We are excited about the progress Viva Methanol has made on this project. The natural gas route offers a strong competitive edge for petrochemical producers."
The MTO technology was developed jointly by UOP and Hydro-Norway, utilizing a proprietary catalyst that ensures high yields and minimal by-products. It also allows flexible production adjustments based on market needs. The olefin cracking process, developed with Total Petrochemicals, enhances overall output and reduces waste, making the entire system more efficient.
Viva Methanol is a subsidiary of Eurochem Corporation, a Singapore-based private company. This partnership highlights the growing importance of innovative chemical processes in tapping into regional energy resources and meeting global market demands.
