“Xia Shipbuilding Heavy Industry” leaps into the wave of world-class shipbuilding technology

Xiamen Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. recently announced the completion and delivery of its sixth 4,900-position car-rolled carrier for the British ZODIC shipping company on September 28. Alongside this achievement, the company’s 80,000-ton shipbuilding project is nearing completion. The key facility, a 300-ton gantry ceiling lifting system, has entered the commissioning phase, with the berth expected to be operational by October. This milestone is anticipated to enable the continuous production of eight automotive ro-ro carriers within a year. Experts believe this marks Xiamen Shipbuilding Heavy Industry's entry into the forefront of world-class shipbuilding technology. This success stems from the company’s ability to produce high-quality car-rolled transport ships. In 2003, after seven years of modernization, Xiamen Shipbuilding had developed mature technologies for container and bulk carriers over 10,000 tons, earning recognition from global shipowners. When a British shipowner proposed building a car carrier capable of transporting more than 4,300 vehicles—a task no Chinese firm dared to take—Xiamen Shipbuilding decided to "be the first to eat the crab." This bold move led to six orders worth nearly $300 million. With only over 500 car carriers in existence worldwide, these vessels significantly reduce land transportation costs but require highly complex manufacturing. The ship features over 12 layers of thin plates on the deck, making welding extremely challenging. To overcome these obstacles, Xiamen divided the process into hundreds of segments, used computer simulations, and successfully launched its first car carrier. Key technologies were refined through both research and practical implementation. By 2006, the first vessel was delivered, marking a domestic breakthrough with a value of $43 million. Nearly 20 core innovations earned industry recognition, with a Japanese expert noting that even Japan would take longer to build such a vessel. Xiamen Shipbuilding now stands among the world’s leading shipbuilders. While expanding the second and third phases of its 80,000-ton shipyard, Xiamen continues to innovate, shortening construction cycles and improving efficiency. It has become the sole core company in China’s growing super-large car transport ship manufacturing series. Following the success of the first ship, the British shipowner placed additional orders, along with Maersk, bringing the total number of car ship orders to 20. Today, the production cycle for the sixth ro-ro carrier is under 106 days. The growth of Xiamen Shipbuilding has driven development in the shipbuilding industry across the South Anhui Golden Triangle. Many parts manufacturers in Zhapu and Longhai have joined the supply chain, becoming upstream suppliers. A large-scale shipbuilding industry chain—from spare parts to marketing—is forming in the new Xiamen Port. Last year, the company achieved an output value of 800 million yuan, and this year it aims for 1.4 billion yuan. Its production schedule is already booked up to 2012.
