The Northwest Herald recently reported on the resignation of a lieutenant from the Marengo Fire Department. According to multiple sources, Lt. Russ Kahl stepped down on Tuesday after it was discovered that he had taken $6,700 from the nonprofit Marengo Fire Rescue Association.
Kahl, who had served as president of the organization for almost two years, allegedly withdrew funds in three separate instances this month. The current president, Scott Klaassens, who was just appointed to the role, confirmed the allegations. Before resigning, Kahl returned the full amount to the association. Although the organization has informed local police about the incident, no criminal charges have been filed so far.
“We made the decision at this time that he shouldn’t be charged,†Klaassens said. “This isn’t a closed case yet. It remains open while we continue our audit and gather more information.â€
Kahl was suspended from the fire department a week prior, following concerns raised by the association’s treasurer. The treasurer noticed several unauthorized withdrawals, which violated the organization’s financial policies. In response, the board plans to conduct a full audit to ensure no other funds were misused. They also intend to review and strengthen their financial procedures moving forward.
According to fire officials, the money taken came from private donations within the association, not from public funds. The Marengo Fire Rescue Association is a nonprofit group that relies on donations to purchase essential supplies and equipment not covered by state funding for volunteer firefighters.
Marengo Police Chief Joseph Hallman mentioned that his department was informed of the incident last week. However, he explained that an official investigation can only begin once a formal complaint is filed. He added that the matter was handled internally by the fire department. “No one filed charges, and no formal complaint was made,†Hallman said. “We would investigate if something came to us, but it never reached our office.â€
This incident has sparked discussions within the community about transparency and accountability in nonprofit organizations, especially those supporting first responders. As the audit continues, the focus will remain on restoring trust and ensuring better financial oversight in the future.
