At the time of the National Waste Rubber Recycling Technology Innovation Forum, Fan Rende, the Secretary-General of the China Rubber Industry Association, emphasized in an interview that encouraging enterprises to develop and promote new technologies has always been a key practice in the rubber industry. During the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, the association will continue to prioritize technological innovation, building on existing advanced technologies while pushing companies to focus on independent innovation. This includes developing environmentally friendly and safe products tailored to market changes, as well as investing in new equipment and technologies to expand the circular economy within the rubber sector.
The development of the Chinese rubber industry currently exhibits three major characteristics. First, China has been the world's largest consumer of rubber for four consecutive years, with high output levels of tires and other key products. Second, the gap between supply and demand for rubber resources is growing, with an annual shortage exceeding 50%, making recycling a crucial strategy for energy conservation. Third, China is one of the top producers of used rubber, and the issue of waste rubber pollution is becoming increasingly severe. It is estimated that by 2020, waste rubber production will exceed 6 million tons. Without structural changes, the environmental impact will worsen significantly.
Therefore, implementing a circular economy has become an essential path for the industry’s sustainable development. Based on the principles of "reduce, reuse, recycle," the focus should be on recycling used rubber products, promoting tire retreading and the use of rubber powder to improve resource utilization. The association encourages collaboration across the industry to strengthen the recycling chain and advance the circular economy.
To drive progress, the China Rubber Industry Association has identified the comprehensive utilization of waste tires and rubber as a pilot for circular development. Companies are urged to invest in scientific research and technological upgrades, focusing on green, energy-efficient, and safe rubber products. Key measures include advancing the production and application of reclaimed rubber and rubber powder, improving desulfurization techniques, and promoting low-cost normal-temperature grinding methods for rubber powder.
In tire manufacturing, efforts are being made to develop eco-friendly additives and special carbon blacks, reduce energy consumption, and enhance retreading processes. Nitrogen vulcanization, which is efficient and cost-effective, is gaining traction among leading manufacturers. Additionally, tire companies are encouraged to enter the retreading market to boost recycling rates.
Innovation remains central to industry transformation. The association supports large-scale enterprises that can scale up production, process follow-up products, and prioritize environmental protection. Through credit systems and brand building, these companies are driven to invest in technology and equipment upgrades. Regional cooperation and reorganization of smaller firms are also encouraged to optimize production and distribution.
Ultimately, the association aims to establish industrial bases for waste rubber utilization, leveraging innovations from leading enterprises to reshape the industry chain and foster a more sustainable rubber economy.
