Changhang Yangtze River 200 container ship research and development has achieved remarkable results

After nearly three years of operational inspection, the large-scale, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly Yangtze River 200-container ship developed by China Yangtze River Shipping Group has delivered impressive results. It has become a key player in container transportation along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in China. With the implementation of the western region development strategy and the improved water transport conditions following the Three Gorges Reservoir project, container transport in the upper Yangtze region has seen rapid growth. According to statistics, the number of containers exported from Chongqing increased from 80,000 units in 2001 to 250,000 units in 2005—more than a threefold increase. This highlights the promising future of container transportation in the region. Seizing market opportunities, China Changhang Chongqing Changjiang Steamship Company actively adjusted its development strategy, focusing on research and development of new ship designs suitable for the reservoir area. The company also optimized its capacity structure to meet growing demand. The development of the 200-container ships was technically advanced, involving high levels of innovation and expertise across multiple disciplines. Based on the Engineering Design Institute, China Changhang Chongqing Co., Ltd. assembled a team of top technical professionals from the Ministry of Machinery Technology and Dongfeng Shipbuilding Corporation. Through extensive research and careful selection, they gradually overcame various technical challenges. In March 2003, the company successfully completed the design of the 200-container ships, which were approved by the CCS (China Classification Society) Wuhan Review Center. By October 2004, further research and optimization during the initial construction and operation phase made the new ship design more practical, technologically advanced, and functionally efficient. These vessels are highly versatile, primarily designed for container transport along the main Yangtze River route from Chongqing to Shanghai, while also capable of carrying general cargo and dry bulk goods. The new 200-container ships feature low energy consumption, high speed, large carrying capacity, and excellent maneuverability. They are also environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing, and cost-effective. Compared to the older 97-container ships, these new vessels have doubled their load capacity while only increasing energy consumption by 35%. Their performance has earned them strong recognition. In February 2005, Shanghai Far East International Leasing Co., Ltd. fully endorsed the design, leading to the signing of six financing lease contracts for 200-container ships between China Changhang Group Chongqing Company and the leasing firm. All six vessels are now in operation and have become a crucial support for long-haul container transportation in China.
