China's nitric acid equipment has been fully domesticated

The reporter learned from Liaoyang Petrochemical Fiber Company that the 111,000 tons/year dilute nitric acid and 40,000 tons/year concentrated nitric acid plant, designed by the Second Design Institute of Chemical Industry, has been in operation for four months. Once full production capacity is reached, the four-in-one core unit has become the first domestically produced and successfully operated unit of its kind in China, marking a major breakthrough in the country's nitric acid industry. Previously, Chinese nitric acid plants, especially their core equipment, relied heavily on imported technology, resulting in high investment costs. However, the second concentrated nitric acid plant at Liaoyang Petrochemical Company uses the magnesium nitrate process, while the dilute nitric acid unit employs a proprietary modified dual pressurization technology developed by the hospital. A key advantage of this new system is that all equipment is locally manufactured. The four-in-one core unit was contracted and produced by Shaanxi Blower Factory, ending years of reliance on foreign imports. This is the third domestic four-in-one unit of its kind. The previous two were installed at Yunpo Chemical Industry and Shijiazhuang Fertilizer Plant, but the latter had not yet started operations, and the one at Yunpo was experiencing operational issues. In contrast, the unit at Liaoyang Petrochemical Fiber Co., Ltd. has been running smoothly since November last year, meeting all design specifications. Another notable feature of the new device is its ability to produce dilute nitric acid with a concentration as high as 65%. To achieve this, researchers evaluated various methods, including increasing absorption pressure, lowering absorption temperature, and adjusting the absorption volume. They ultimately chose to install cooling coils in the absorption tower to lower the temperature. This approach not only increases acid concentration but also reduces pollutant levels in the exhaust. Operational data confirms that the system meets all design requirements, achieving a 65% acid concentration. Even in winter, when temperatures are low, the exhaust treatment system can still meet emission standards, significantly reducing operational costs. According to reports, the Second Design Institute of Chemical Industry has designed over 20 nitric acid units nationwide. The successful operation of the localized nitric acid plant at Liaoyang Petrochemical Fiber Company serves as a model for future construction and expansion projects in the industry, demonstrating the potential for self-reliance and technological advancement in China’s chemical sector.
